THE ROSE OF WINDS
In 1806, the admiral Francis Beaufort publishes a scale to express the strength of the wind. In 1874 this scale was adopted by the International Metheorological Committee.

Hurricane
|
In 1949 another 5 degrees, up to force 17, are added in order to express the different types of Hurricanes.
These receive different names depending on the region where they happen. So, in Central and North America
we talk about Hurricanes, in the asiatic coasts of the Pacific Ocean they are called Typhoon, in Australia
Willy Willies. In the United States the inland Tornadoes can blow at more than 350 km. per hour.

The vice-admiral Sir Percy Douglas, created a scale to express the sea conditions in 1917, when he was responsible for the Metheorological Navy Service.
